Summary

One day in 1882, Thomas Edison flipped a switch that lit up lower Manhattan with incandescent light and changed the way people live ever after。

The electric light bulb was only one of thousands of Edison’s inventions, which include the phonograph and the kinetoscope, an early precursor to the movie camera。

As a boy, observing a robin catch a worm and then take flight, he fed a playmate a mixture of worms and water to see if she could fly! Here’s an accessible, appealing biography with 100 black-and-white illustrations。

Thomas Alva Edison was a very busy and intelligent man who invented over a thousand things throughout his life。 He seldom slept and was always writing down notes。 This was a good summary of his life and well worth the read。

If you have kids this is a must read with them。 Some interesting things I learned。 1。 He was HUGE at the time。 When he tied President Humphrey requested everyone turn their lights out across the country at a specific time。2。 He lived in Port Huron for awhile。3。 He invented a battery operated car。 He was good friends with Henry Ford。4。 He was almost completely deaf at the end of his life and didn't mind as it helped him to focus and concentrate better。 I will probably reread this book with my kid If you have kids this is a must read with them。 Some interesting things I learned。 1。 He was HUGE at the time。 When he tied President Humphrey requested everyone turn their lights out across the country at a specific time。2。 He lived in Port Huron for awhile。3。 He invented a battery operated car。 He was good friends with Henry Ford。4。 He was almost completely deaf at the end of his life and didn't mind as it helped him to focus and concentrate better。 I will probably reread this book with my kids next year。 5。 His shop was in Menlo Park, New Jersey 6。 The Detroit Edison Electric company was named after him 7。 His biggest money maker was an industrial size storage battery (developed it for his car but was used by other businesses instead) and his true love (invention) was the phonograph。 。。。more

Wow most amazing person in the 1800 hundreds

I loved the small details of his growing up years - it made me laugh at what a normal kid he was。 What impresses me is how these early inventors preserved until they figured out what it was they wanted to make。 “The man who doesn’t make up his mind to cultivate the habit of thinking cannot make the most of himself。 All progress, all success, springs from thinking。” - Thomas Edison

Amazing story! The reverberations of Edison’s invention are still being felt。 I benefit every time I read my Bible under my desk lamp。 All good things come down from the God of lights!

Câu chuyện về nhà phát minh vĩ đại nhất nước Mỹ。 Tuy nhiên mạch chuyện hơi bị rời rạc và chưa làm nổi bật được những phát minh của ông。

A very interesting and quick read about the life of Thomas Alva Edison!I opted for 4 stars and not 5 because the style of narration is a bit confusing。 The author kept jumping back and forth between dates, and it threw me off。 Another point is that there is so much not mentioned in the book when it came to his interactions with other scientists (ex。 Nicola Tesla)Overall a fun read, 9/10 would recommend! Definitely read other resources if you want a full image regarding Edison's life。 A very interesting and quick read about the life of Thomas Alva Edison!I opted for 4 stars and not 5 because the style of narration is a bit confusing。 The author kept jumping back and forth between dates, and it threw me off。 Another point is that there is so much not mentioned in the book when it came to his interactions with other scientists (ex。 Nicola Tesla)Overall a fun read, 9/10 would recommend! This was a great read。 It is short enough to provide the basics of a biography, but written in a fun and interesting way。

Ashley

This book was good, but not as exciting as a lot of other books in the “Who Was。。。?” Series。 Most of my second grade students did not enjoy this book。 Some of the information in the book was neat。 Overall not a bad read, just not as fun as others。

Dana Robinson

Good overall history, but barely mentions what a jerk he could be。 No mention of his feuds with Tesla or how his onerous licensing pushed all the movie producers out to California。

Samuel

this is a very good book that has taught me all sorts of cool things about thomas alva edison for example he had to go through over 100 filaments before settling on a piece of thread

This has been the first book that I have read about the greatest inventor of all time。 I am fascinated by his perspiration。 The curiosity that he possessed often highlights the heights that humans can reach with the cooperation and collective learning。 Edison was even the founding father of lab-based research centres in the US, The Bell Labs, Du Pont lab and the Intel lab are testimony to their success。It is a wonderful read for anyone interested in inventions。

Robert

I like this book because it is interesting to discover how the creator of the light bulb made it and made other inventions that we use today。

Veronika Bitting

This book talks about Thomas Edison from birth to death。 It is important for kids to know who invented things because those people are very important to our lives currently。

I generally like the Who Was series。 This is my fifth or sixth book。 They vary in quality, and that’s probably because they’re not written by the same author, and the fact that we have different number of sources available for each of the characters biographies are written of。 With Edison, and same as other books in the series, the book follows a story-like style, beginning with his birth and childhood。 Contrary to other books in the series, this book seems to give more focus on his scientific I generally like the Who Was series。 This is my fifth or sixth book。 They vary in quality, and that’s probably because they’re not written by the same author, and the fact that we have different number of sources available for each of the characters biographies are written of。 With Edison, and same as other books in the series, the book follows a story-like style, beginning with his birth and childhood。 Contrary to other books in the series, this book seems to give more focus on his scientific discoveries and professional life than his personal life (which I like)。 Other scientist biographies in the series allotted almost equal weight for personal and professional life。 。。。more
